Sleeping Bags for the Homeless, Silicon Valley

Luckily for me, I stumbled upon Sleeping Bags for the Homeless Silicon Valley by accident. I was doing the usual morning scroll through my Facebook feed, when I saw an event pop up. It was an invitation to feed and distribute items to the homeless in Silicon Valley. Seeing that I had free time that Saturday, I decided to share the event and sign up to volunteer.

Saturday morning, I drove out to San Jose and saw a few people gathered at the designated meeting spot. By the time I parked my car and walked over with my donations, the “few people” had grown to about 30 – all ready to hit the pavement and help those in need. I quickly realized that most of the volunteers didn’t know each other. As we started introducing ourselves, I learned that most had learned of the organization the same way I did – scrolling through Facebook. No matter where we came from, it was clear we had one thing in common – the spirit of giving and willingness to help those in need.

Sleeping Bags for the Homeless Silicon Valley is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that started at a San Jose Friends Meeting, and other religious groups within the surrounding communities. However, if you happen to connect with the organization through their Facebook page you’ll most likely hear from Mark Metzler, one of the founding members of Sleeping Bags for the Homeless Silicon Valley.

Sleeping Bags for the Homeless Silicon Valley has: made 19 trips to homeless camps, distributed over 250 tarps, 185 sleeping bags, 210 blankets and 28 tents over the past year.

I had the pleasure of meeting with Mark to learn more about Sleeping Bags for the Homeless Silicon Valley. In reminiscing about the organization’s early beginnings, Mark said, “We’ve grown so much, and we continue to get more volunteers!” He excitedly hands me a paper with statistics, and they were quite inspiring. To date, Sleeping Bags for the Homeless Silicon Valley has: made 19 trips to homeless camps, distributed over 250 tarps, 185 sleeping bags, 210 blankets and 28 tents over the past year. Keep in mind, those stats leave out the water, food and clothing goods the team has also distributed!

I asked Mark what he believed was the best thing about this organization and he said, “I think the best thing we have done, is to give the average person…who has probably never been out to a homeless camp, before….an opportunity to get up, out of simple compassion, gather up donations, and go out and help those outside without shelter, instead of waiting for others to try and solve the problem of chronic homelessness. Everyone who joins us, is truly, joyously happy about the part they play.”

Every distribution I am more inspired to go out and help out those living in the streets, without shelter. I am not the same as before. Now, I look to the homeless with another eyes and I am always open to start a conversation, wherever I am. Every close contact with a homeless, it is a lesson learned.
