Haircuts with Heart

“It really is the most basic element of self-care.
A haircut makes someone feel good.
We’re able to give touch, compassion and a listening ear…
it makes a difference.” – Rebecca Beardsley, Founder, Haircuts with Heart

We don’t know about you, but when we leave the salon with an amazing haircut…we’re on Cloud 9. So, it’s no question then, the importance of an organization like Haircuts with Heart. Haircuts with Heart is a new nonprofit organization that provides free personalized grooming services, gift bags and lunch to help children, women, men, homeless, and veterans in need.

With over 30 years of experience in the hair industry, and owner of ShineForth Salon, Rebecca Beardsley decided she wanted to have a larger impact in her community. Rebecca coupled what she saw as a need in the homeless community, with her passion for hair, and in 2016 founded Haircuts with Heart.

To date, Haircuts with Heart has already provided 300 haircuts to homeless and in-need individuals, and partnered with over 10 local organizations such as Boys and Girls Club of Alameda, Operation Dignity, Dignity House, BOSS, I am MISSEY and Women’s Day Drop in Center.

“We contact the organizations directly and ask if there’s anything we can do to help. We then bring mirrors, chairs, tables and food,” said Rebecca, “we’ve found it’s easier for us to come to them – we make a day out of it. We want to make it a really fun experience!”

Rebecca is quick to acknowledge that none of this would be possible without the help of local, like-minded, talented stylists, such as Seven Salon, The Braid Bar, Shear Passion Salon, Haire_of_Noir, Kay Does Hair, Julie Nichols and Aurielle’s Imaging Studio just to name a few.

“We’ve had some amazing stylists donate their time and energy to this. I really believe we are demystifying homelessness, and showing that they’re just people in need. Being able to bring hairdressers together, for such a great cause…it just feels good.”

In an effort to help fund the mission of Haircuts with Heart, Rebecca created the Salon Style Box. Hand curated by a master stylist, the Salon Style Box is full of premium and luxurious beauty products, and a percentage of each Box purchased goes toward Haircuts with Heart. Rebecca also hopes to partner with hair care brands, in order to provide those served with hair products that specifically fit their hair type and need.

“Find small ways to give back, it’s often something we take for granted in our own life – that’s what we can offer to others.”

As our interview started to wind down, Rebecca left us with one final thought, “Find small ways to give back, it’s often something we take for granted in our own life – that’s what we can offer to others. I’m a stylist, I didn’t need to reinvent the wheel, what I have is enough [to give].” We couldn’t agree more.

Haircuts with Heart will be at the The Berkeley Food and Housing Project – Men’s Overnight Shelter on August 30, 2017 from 6-9:00 pm. They will be providing the men with haircuts and beard trims, and serving snacks and drinks. If you’d like to volunteer at the August 30th event, please CLICK HERE to sign up.
